Historic background

As a result of the scission produced in the National Liberation Movement, the Congress of Intelligentsia (CI) was established in 1993 so as to respond to the changing political situation in the Republic of Moldova. The detachment of the CI from People's Christian Democratic Front (PCDF) explains ideological similitude between them and the choice of the CI for "real independence of the Republic of Moldova", the fact that outlines its identity.

The II Congress of the CI held on April 10, 1993 approved the party program and bylaws. The program was later on revised during the VI Congress of Party of Democratic Forces, whereas the bylaws were revised during the IV Congress (1994), the V (1995), and the VII (1997).

On the eve of parliamentary elections of 1994 CI formed the Peasants' and Intelligentsia's Bloc, which was cast 9.21% of the total votes cast. Consequently the bloc won 11 seats, out of which 5 of the CI.

In 1994 the Democratic Party headed Gheorghe Ghimpu, and Democratic-Christian Party of Moldova, headed by Anatol Dubrovschi, joined the CI and established the United Democratic Congress, which changed its name to Party of Democratic Forces in 1995.

On January 23, 1995 "Alliance of Democratic Forces" Electoral Bloc was established gathering nine political parties, including United Democratic Congress. In the 1995 general local elections the party won 2,333 seats in the city and village councils, 252 seats in municipal and rayonal councils, and 83 mayor seats.

To be able to delegate its own candidate in the presidential race, the Party of Democratic Forces left the Alliance of Democratic Forces and the VI Congress designated Valeriu Matei for the presidential race. Valeriu Matei was the fifth in the race.

The Party of Democratic Forces run in the 1998 parliamentary elections and afterwards joined the Alliance for Democracy and Reforms.

In the early parliamentary elections of 2001, the Party of Democratic Forces failed to pass the 6% threshold of representation and failed to secure seats in Parliament.

The IX Congress of the PDF held on 1 December 2002 approved National Council decision on joining the Social-Liberal Party.
